Lunch + Learn: Art as Cultural Preservation + Storytelling
Once More, with Revelry: Art as Cultural Preservation + Storytelling is an engaging Lunch + Learn experience that explores the cultural, artistic, and historical narratives behind Mobile’s Carnival traditions through the lens of contemporary art.
Led by artist ShaMyra Sylvester, this session takes participants inside the Once More, with Revelry collection—an exhibition that reimagines the official Mardi Gras poster tradition while centering the Black cultural contributions that helped shape the celebration in the birthplace of American Mardi Gras.
Through storytelling, visual presentation, and open dialogue, attendees will explore the origins of mystic societies, the legacy of the Colored Carnival Association, the economic and cultural impact of Mardi Gras, and the generational traditions that continue to influence Carnival culture today.
This Lunch + Learn invites participants to reflect on how art can preserve history, challenge incomplete narratives, and celebrate the communities whose contributions built and continue to shape the traditions we enjoy today.
What to Expect
• Guided presentation of the Once More, with Revelry collection
• Historical insights into Mobile’s Mardi Gras traditions
• Conversation on art as a tool for cultural preservation
